The Difference Between Oversteer and Understeer

We want to provide answers to some of your most common questions about vehicle performance and terminology, so today, we'll be discussing what exactly the difference is between oversteer and understeer.

Oversteer and understeer are alike in that they are vehicle dynamics terms, which refer to how sensitive a vehicle is to its steering. To understand the differences, you must know how they work.

When Oversteer occurs, what's happening is that the vehicle is turning much more sharply than the driver's actions intended and this could potentially lead into a spin. Understeer happens when the driver makes a turn, but the vehicle isn't as sensitive to it, so the turn isn't properly executed. This can lead to veering off of the road.
